Viansa '22 Los Olivos Altura Nebbiolo
The Nebbiolo varietal is renowned for its large purple clusters that produce vibrant, rich, bigger tannin, and terracotta-color wines. Our 2022 Nebbiolo is a wonderful example of these characteristics. The perfumed nose jumps out of the glass with bright blackberry, currant, dried strawberry, rose, and licorice. The palate expands with similar flavors with the wonderful texture and a rich entry that is balanced by the smooth tannins and bright acidity. Try this unique Italian wine with vitello tonnato or braised beef in red wine and polenta.
Clusters were hand harvested in the early morning and arrived at the winery cold. Grapes were destemmed to stainless steel tank and were cold soaked for 48 hours to extract color. The must was warmed to 85°F and inoculated with RC212 yeast. This strain was selected because of its ability to enhance ripe berry fruits with spice and have a rich mouthfeel. Fermentation lasted 14 days before the wine was drained and pressed and went through secondary fermentation in neutral barrels. The wine was aged 17 months before being bottled.
Label Artwork: The name Nebbiolo comes from nebbia, the Italian word for fog, in reference to the powder-like bloom that appears on the grapes during harvest season and because the best growing sites are located above the fog. This label artwork includes some foggy whites and overall lighter colors to represent the warmer temperatures at higher elevations. Additionally, Nebbiolo grapes produce wine with a terracotta color, rather than the deep burgundy and purple seen in many other red wines. This clay color plays a prominent role in the beautiful marble artwork on our label.
